SummaryMeng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer to Huawei tech company, was arrested December 1st in Vancouver by mounted police after the United States of America pressured Canada into making the arrest. The US's extradition request is mainly based around suspected bank fraud. China claims that this arrest is purely political in nature as a way to pressure Chinese economic expansion while Canadian and American Officials state it is purely a justified arrest based on criminal acts. | |
Huawei company and China
Ms. Meng pictured right with the company's logo left. Huawei has become a large designer of mobile phones in China. | China views the arrest of this company executive as a completely political move to pressure the company to ease foreign interactions outside of China. The current CEO of Huawei, Ren Zhengfei, has stated that this arrest will in no way damage the company but also claimed that their company is in no ways a threat to any country and are purely for economic growth. He stated in an interview that "There's no way the US can crush us ... the world cannot leave us because we are more advanced. Even if they persuade more countries not to use us temporarily, we can always scale things down a bit." as an answer to sanctions placed against them. |
Canada and America
America sees the arrest of Ms. Meng as a completely justified action as they claim to have evidence that she was involved in wire and bank fraud. The economic war that had already been in place prior to this event has only lead to more tension between the two largest economies of the world and because the majority of goods in America are produced in China this problem is the main issue in global politics to solve. Other western countries such as those in Europe are in a similar situation because of their ties to America as well. | Canada's close political and economical ties to America commonly mean we become allies in conflicts relating them. |
Connection
For America's main ideological stand point being focused on a free market economy with low government involvement the limiting of a companies foreign involvement as a means to expand is an interesting step in international relations, the success of these two companies in sense of gross annual GDP and individual success has been attributed to the capitalistic economic policies of the developing economies of these two nations. By limiting the expansion of competing businesses in China it would allow American businesses to increase their markets and as such profit.
My opinion
Groups are now rallying for the release of Ms.Meng such as this group who have written a sign and are sharing photos of their sign. | I believe that its unlikely Ms. Meng is truly guilty of those actions and that it is highly likely that she was arrested as a political pawn in order to pressure China into easing foreign relations. In this sense she should be released to ease current tensions and diplomatic actions taken to solve current economic problems. Diplomacy in an orderly sense as opposed to a "pissing contest" between world powers will only lead to conflict at either a political, economic or in a worst case scenario armed conflict. |
